T he Internet of Things (IoT) is changing the face of future cities, bringing smart technologies and adding convenience. An important facet of the smart city is digital logistics and efficient fleet management. Fleets use telematics to monitor the location, movement and status of vehicles, generating a holistic view of their networks.

As a result, in an increasingly global world, new needs are arising in the so-called Smart cities. The most tangible proof is the great effort that many operators and transportation companies for citizens are making to adapt to cities and agglomerations that increasingly need more technology to coexist in a more interconnected world.

Challenges arise and so do opportunities, proof of which is this success story in Bogota with Tempel Group and the city's largest transport operator. The need to comprehensively manage a solution for more efficient and safer driving in large road transport fleets of people and goods was the starting point for a project of this magnitude.

To solve the need and add more security, Tempel Group Colombia office developed a solution thanks to Advantech embedded computers. The ARK SD570 range, was the ideal product to address the 3 most important considerations of the project: central office monitoring and security, bus positioning and monitoring of ticket and fare collection data.

These embedded computers, also known as "rugged" or industrial for their control rooms, are capable of addressing challenges such as the monitoring of the Bogotá bus fleet, and stand out for their wide range of features, such as:

  • Fanless signaling Intel® Celeron® N2930/J1900 quad-core™ SoC with low power consumption
  • platform
  • NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 730M integrated graphics module for UHD/FHD playback
  • Supports simultaneous output from multiple displays (up to 4 outputs)
  • Compact size and mechanical design ensure convenient installation in the field and in all applications
  • Internal mini PCIe interface allows easy expansion (e.g. WLAN, 3G or TV tuner)
  • 2 COM ports for system and application integration
  • Built-in content management software for editing, scheduling, and monitoring.

Thanks to the solution provided by Tempel Group's engineering team, not only was the work of the entire Bogotá transportation team streamlined, but fuel and operating costs were significantly reduced thanks to route optimization, stoppage prevention and fuel drains.
